Founded in 1991 as Commonwealth Telecommunications Corporation (CTC), the company focused on the sale of switched voice services to the business community. In the early nineties, as technology evolved, the company changed both name and direction.

In 1994, Comtel Communications was born. A consultative sales approach was adopted offering diverse multi-provider product lines. The scope of the company's services expanded to include data, paging, and wireless, as well as switched voice services. The "one-stop" approach to communications consulting allowed Comtel to provide clients the highest level of quality, consistency and efficiency. The results of this new concept were exciting to the corporate client and were profitable to Comtel as sales and revenues increased significantly.

The 1996 acquisition of Allcom Technologies, Inc. of Harrisonburg, Virginia increased Comtel's leverage to negotiate better rates and higher service levels. This acquisition doubled the company's billing base and increased its penetration into Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. Comtel's growth continued post-acquisition. Sales increased dramatically, resulting in a doubling of revenue. Comtel's clients benefited as telecom providers responded with better pricing and broader product offerings.

In 1996 Comtel Communications helped found the AGENT ALLIANCE, an organization that blends the talents of similar telecom firms for the purposes of shared knowledge to maintain cutting-edge technology and gain new opportunities for clients. The member firms represent $200+ million annually in managed communications services. Comtel's participation has helped the company achieve greater industry visibility and a national reputation.

Flexibility is the key to Comtel's success. As the shift from traditional voice services to data, frame relay and broadband arose, Comtel Communications embraced these opportunities and stayed ahead of the technological curve. Another area where Comtel is positioned to provide advise is the local exchange service market. This keen commitment to providing up-to-date services is the primary reason for Comtel's 98+ percent client retention rate and for the company's continued growth.

In 1999, a landmark decision propelled Comtel Communications to the next level. President and CEO, Benjamin R. Humphreys sold a portion of the company to a group of private investors. The capital raised allowed Comtel to build a management team with strong industry experience, expand its consultant marketing force and pursue innovative communications options in the new Millennium.

Comtel again faced the future in 2000, acquiring the assets of Telemanagement Services, Inc. of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. TSI, headed by J. Michael Green, is a leader in telemanagement-consulting services, serving Central Pennsylvania since 1995. This acquisition added client base, new provider relationships and experience in the wholesale operator services market to Comtel's portfolio.

Early in 2006, Comtel announced the acquisition of East Coast Communication’s telecom assets. This acquisition brought together two of the strongest telecom consulting firms in Virginia.

Excellent growth coupled with strategic acquisitions have propelled Comtel Communications to national leadership in the communications and network consulting market. The future is bright as the experienced management team embraces the ever-changing technology and is prepared to bring clients cutting-edge communications solutions... Today, Tomorrow and Beyond.
